ABOUT THE EXAM

Why take the PSAT?

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) is primarily a practice version of the SAT, tailored for students to get a head start on test preparation.

What not many people know, however, is that the PSAT is also a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which means that it can lead to more money for college through special scholarships. Every year, the top performers of 11th grade PSAT-takers become Semifinalists, and some go on to win a $2,500 scholarship from the National Merit Corporation and are eligible for many others. Recognition as a National Merit Scholar (or Commended Scholar) also distinguishes you as an college applicant and may result in additional scholarship awards from colleges themselves! And worst case scenario, even if you don't win a scholarship or National Merit title, you've prepared yourself for success on the SAT just by studying for the PSAT.

Sophomores and juniors may take the PSAT in the fall (Oct. 15th, 2022), so now is a great time to start preparing if you haven't already! 8-10th graders may also take other versions of the PSAT.

COURSE OUTLINE

After each class, students will be assigned homework that may be turned in on Google Classroom, which will usually be a couple of practice sections based on the content covered that day. Short, timed test sections will also be administered in class so that students may better prepare for the real testing environment and get immediate feedback. Finally, students will complete a full-length PSAT prior to the first class and before the last class so that they may review their progress!
